In case you weren’t aware, it’s National Women’s History Month! This is the month that we take time to celebrate and honor women’s contributions in American history and I don’t have to tell you that there are many.  We’ve come a long way in our society, despite the opposition and pressure we’ve faced since the foundation of our great nation and continue to face to this day. One of the pressures that weigh so heavily on women in our society today is the pressure to look a certain way and ironically enough, leading into Women’s History Month was National Eating Disorders Awareness week, a condition that affects twice as many women as it does men. Yes, it’s unfortunate to say that despite all of the great strides we’ve made, women still suffer greatly from body image issues.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), around 30 million people in the United States have some kind of eating disorder, and around 20 million of these people are women.  But before the increase of body image issues due to social media even became a thing, eating disorders existed way back into the 19th century. Women have always been under pressure to look a certain way or present themselves a certain way in our society. And while it’s not blatantly stated in some cases, it’s subconsciously implanted into our brains through magazines, movies, and the Internet.  

A study conducted by a doctor of the Department of Psychology At York University in the UK says that social pressures are believed to play a key role in women’s body image perceptions, which in turn could lead to some form of an eating disorder.  There are six well-known eating disorders. Of course, more than these exists but the one’s listed below are more common:

1. Anorexia nervosa

2. Bulimia nervosa

3. Binge eating disorder

4. Pica

5. Rumination disorder

6. Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder

Over the past couple of years, I feel that our society has done a decent job of shining the spotlight on body types that are not as often celebrated on a national level.  I think it is important to do so, all while making sure we point out the importance of being healthy and how that, above anything else is the most important thing. Because the reality is, you can be thin and look healthy on the outside but be a very unhealthy person on the inside.  At the end of the day, nothing beats consistency with a good eating style, exercise, and self care regimen to make sure your overall health trumps your physical appearance any day.
